Kottayam: Former Director General of Police Tomin Thachankary has been sentenced to four years in prison in a disproportionate assets case. The Kottayam Vigilance Court also imposed a fine of ₹30,84,892 on him. The court had found Thachankary guilty in the case and, while pronouncing the sentence, observed that he had held a senior position in the state police and was not entitled to any reduction in punishment.

Following the verdict, Thachankary will be taken into police custody and shifted to the Central Jail in Thiruvananthapuram. He is the first officer of DGP rank to be sentenced in a corruption case.

The case relates to allegations that Thachankary accumulated disproportionate assets worth ₹64.70 lakh during his official period from January 2003 to July 2007. According to the position of the Vigilance investigation, the inspection conducted by the agency identified expenses amounting to the said sum, but Thachankary was unable to account for the corresponding income.

The investigation team found that, during the period under examination, the assets accumulated by Thachankary were 135.80 percent higher than his known income, according to the prosecution case.

The investigation followed a complaint filed by Bobby Kuruvila alleging that Thachankary had acquired houses, flats and properties beyond what could be justified by his income while he was in service. After Thachankary was promoted to the rank of DIG in 2007, the investigation was conducted under the leadership of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP).

By the time the charge sheet was filed, Thachankary had been elevated to the position of Deputy Head of the State Police. The prosecution examined several witnesses, including a former Joint Secretary of the Home Department. The defence examined a former Additional Chief Secretary, a former Additional Director General of Police, Income Tax officials and Thachankary's sister as defence witnesses.
